Noticias | Press Release – Oxxean performed engineering and oceanography studies for tuna farming centers in Mexico

This is the first time that this type of work has been carried out abroad and it was performed by the Maritime Works Division of the company.

Baja Aquafarm is one of the Mexican companies dedicated to the capture, farming and export of bluefin tuna, whose export market is 80% to Japan. Only to this Asian country the firm exports between 2,000 and 4,000 tons per year.

And it was in the area of Baja California, in Ensenada and Coronado Islands that Oxxean carried out engineering and oceanography studies for Aquafarm’s concessions, which house cages of up to 80 meters in diameter.

«This is the first time that Oxxean performs services abroad, it was a new and enriching experience, where it was possible to learn and exchange experiences on the farming of tuna and the way these operations are carried out. We are very satisfied with what we have done to date, because we were able to offer all the experience we have in services rendered to the salmon industry in Chile,» points out Gustavo Pacheco, head of the Underwater Inspections and Oceanography Department of Oxxean Maritime Works.

Víctor Pérez, Oxxean’s Assistant Manager of Engineering & Development explains that «the tuna farming system, unlike salmon in Chile, uses circular cages of up to 80 meters in diameter and in our country they are square metal cages of 40 x 40 meters. Therefore, we will perform the engineering calculations of the anchoring system to deliver the certainty that it requires, and the reports stating that the facilities comply with safety standards demanded by the Mexican authorities”.

Victor Perez adds, «we already had experience in different aquaculture systems in the north of our country, but we hope this work will open the door for us to deliver our services in other places”.
